False Witness

God takes the Ninth Commandment very seriously. It says in Exodus 20:16,

You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

Then, in Deuteronomy 19:18-21, He expounds on the consequences for violating this particular Commandment.

And the judges shall make careful inquiry, and indeed, if the witness is a false witness, who has testified falsely against his brother, then you shall do to him as he thought to have done to his brother; so you shall put away the evil from among you.

And those who remain shall hear and fear, and hereafter they shall not again commit such evil among you.

Your eye shall not pity; life shall be for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.

This matter of bearing false witness – lying – is serious to God, so it should be serious to us as well. Although much of the harshness of the Old Testament has been alleviated by the grace offered to us in the New Testament, those who refuse grace must instead receive harshness. God's reason is plainly stated in verse 19 above – “And those who remain shall hear and fear, and thereafter they shall not again commit such evil among you.”

This is by no means the only place(s) in Scripture that condemns lying; God despises lies and liars. We read in Proverbs 6:16-19,

These six things the Lord hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him:

A proud look,
A lying tongue,
Hands that shed innocent blood,
A heart that devises wicked plans,
Feet that are swift in running to evil,
A false witness who speaks lies,
And one who sows discord among brethren.

Lies are mentioned twice in this list of seven things God hates. They're even considered an abomination! This is the same word used to describe the sin of homosexuality in Leviticus 18:22, which says,

You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination.

The Hebrew word for abomination is תּוֹעֵבַה, tō·ā·vä', which means morally disgusting and unclean. So God says the sin of lying is morally disgusting and unclean, just like the sin of homosexuality. God puts them on the exact same plane.

So, and here's my point: why are Christians even thinking about voting for a known liar (morally disgusting and unclean) like Hillary Clinton?

Inquiring minds want to know.
