Disney's unwarranted injection of homosexuality into their upcoming live-action film version of Beauty and the Beast, starring Emma Watson, of Harry Potter fame, is a betrayal, an absolute betrayal, of everything millions of their former customers had come to expect from a Walt Disney movie. The ultra-macho villain of the film, Gaston, has a short, stubby sidekick named LeFou who is depicted as homosexual in this newest release of the treasured children's story, now no longer quite so innocent.
Director Bill Condon told gay British magazine Attitude, that the character of LeFou, played by actor Josh Gad, will explore his sexuality in what the magazine called a “small, but significant subplot.”
Condon said of LeFou, “He’s confused about what he wants. It’s somebody who’s just realizing that he has these feelings. And Josh makes something really subtle and delicious out of it. And that’s what has its payoff at the end, which I don’t want to give away. But it is a nice, exclusively gay moment in a Disney movie.”
Amid growing controversy over the move, a drive-in theater in Henegar, Alabama has canceled plans to show the film when it's released. “When companies continually force their views on us, we need to take a stand. We all make choices and I am making mine,” the drive-in owner was quoted as saying in a Facebook post.
And the government of Russia (Russia!) is also considering banning the film. Reports emerged of Russia's displeasure over the character this past Saturday. Russian Culture Minister Vladimir Medinsky said the film would be screened prior to the March 16 release there and action would be taken if the content breached the country's law prohibiting the spreading of 'gay propaganda' among minors, the BBC reported.
The movie, whose trailer garnered nearly 130 million views in 24 hours, was set to become an instant blockbuster upon it's release this month. Now, with this late-breaking story coming so close to the March release date, it may be on the road to becoming an instant bomb. The controversy is growing like wildfire and shows no sign of stopping or abating.
To use a well-worn cliché, Disney has gone over to the Dark Side. They can no longer be trusted and they no longer deserve your patronage. I urge you to boycott this film and everything Disney from here on out. As far as I'm concerned, they don't exist any more.
