Abominations and Predictions of Judgments

I'm going to make a prediction about God's future judgment of America, but first I have to lay the groundwork for it.

“Gay” rights advocates on the political Left are fond of excoriating Christians based on a couple of cherry-picked verses from Leviticus, specifically Leviticus 18:22 – “You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination,” and Leviticus 20:13 – “If a man lies with a male as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination. The shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them.”

Granted these verses sound harsh in today's context but that's mainly because the media has gone out of its way to make it so. But there's something else I want you to see.

In Christian circles it's become passé to proclaim that if God doesn't hurry up and punish America for its sexual sins He's going to have to apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah. Most of the focus is on the homosexual sins of those ancient cities as compared to America today, but like Leviticus, there's more to it than that.

When the Angel of the Lord appeared to Abraham in Genesis 18 to proclaim the coming destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah there was no mention of the specific sins they'd committed that were deserving of destruction. Abraham bargained back-and-forth with God for the lives of those in the cities but again, without mentioning the specifics, speaking only of the number of righteous and unrighteous people in the cities.

It's not until the next chapter, Genesis 19, that we discover the men of Sodom want to have sex with the angels whom they mistake for ordinary men. We also discover Lot's two daughters are engaged to men of Sodom – verse 14 says they're married but earlier in verse 8 Lot offered to let the mob have his daughters who “have not known a man” to do with as they pleased. In ancient cultures an engagement was a marriage in every way except sexually; that alone was reserved until after the ceremony.

Lot-and-His-DaughtersThese engagements meant Lot, or at least his daughters, had become very much a part of the culture of Sodom and Gomorrah. After the destruction of the cities his daughters, whose husbands had stayed and perished, deliberately got him drunk then committed incest with him in order to get pregnant. They carried out their plan over two succeeding nights, first the eldest then the youngest.

As an aside, it's interesting to note that the people who sprang from those incestuous couplings were the Moabites and the Ammonites, who went on to become bitter enemies of the Israelites.

Where would Lot's daughters get the idea it was alright to commit incest? From the culture they were raised in of course; Sodom and Gomorrah. While not minimizing the homosexual sins of those cities it's important not to minimize the incestuous sins either.

Now we can get back to our chapters in Leviticus.

Leviticus 18 has one verse condemning homosexual sins but it has thirteen about incest. Similarly, Leviticus 20 has one verse on homosexuality but seven on incest, as well as a scattering of other sins. Chapter 19, sandwiched in-between, runs the gamut from idolatry to keeping the Sabbath to commands to love your neighbor as yourself (verse 18).

Leviticus 18 also has one verse on bestiality while Leviticus 20 has two shorter verses on it.

All these sins are referred to on multiple occasions as abominations, which the people who lived in Canaan had committed. This defiled the land which caused it to vomit them out to make way for the Israelites.

These chapters make it clear these were habitual sins by the people as a whole. But just in case there's any doubt, in Genesis 15 Abraham is asking God how he's going to know his descendants will inherit the land and in Genesis 15:16, God answers him saying;

But in the fourth generation they shall return here, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.

This demonstrates it's the behavior of the people as a whole that triggers God's judgments, not the individual sins of the few or the minority. The whole culture becomes corrupted until sins are legalized instead of outlawed, approved instead of scorned, celebrated instead of condemned.

As Abraham's negotiation with God demonstrates, God will restrain His hand for the sake of a small minority of righteous people but once the number gets too small, all bets are off.

With all that being said, here's my prediction for America:

LGBTQ-logoHomosexuality (and the whole alphabet soup that goes with it) has been legalized and accepted in America. It's a done deal. Once incest and bestiality are also legalized, or at least, decriminalized, and accepted by our culture as a whole, the iniquity of the Americans will be complete.

At that point America will be ripe for judgment.

We haven't been judged yet; God has merely removed His protection from our country, letting us reap what we sow. But this is a negative action, simply refusing to protect us any more.

Once our iniquity is complete He'll move on to the stage of active judgment.

Given what happened to Sodom and Gomorrah, that's a scary thought
